FACT is the Federation Against Copyright Theft. I have nothing against the notion of wanting to protect your copyright but I do not approve of the tactics that FACT employs as I feel that it breaches my own rights as a legitimate customer.
A blog post by Adriana that had the poster by BrokenTV, above, got me thinking about how much I despise the tactics that FACT uses to steal my time every time I play a legitimately-bought DVD:
I paid for the DVD not for the FACT message that I have to watch every time I play it. I can’t skip this message. It is stealing my time. FACT: Time theft should be a crime.
It riles me up when I go to a cinema to relax and watch a movie only to see threatening messages from FACT.
This is a basic matter of consumer rights. I believe that as consumers we have a right not to be subjected to such harassment. I believe that we have a right not to have our time stolen from us.
So what is FACT Off? I don’t entirely know yet. It’s a reaction to the tactics being employed by FACT, that’s for sure. I want it to be a space where we can discuss ways of communicating to FACT that their tactics are not appreciated.
I have other ideas, such as staging a protest at cinemas across the country, that I mentioned in a post I made recently on my personal blog.
Have you had enough of FACT? Are you interested in getting involved? Leave a comment and let’s see what we can do about it.
If you want to show your support, I can also add you to the blog roll of blogs that support FACT Off!
